Othello

This project was a collaboration with Fernanda Oliveira, a Ballerina at the Philadelphia Ballet. In the role of director she responded to Sabrina’s ideas and made decisions and suggestions throughout the process.

The story of Othello has a long history but, in a dramatic alteration to the telling of the traditional tale the characters of Othello and Iago where both cast as Black men. Therefore, altering the significance of Iago’s hatred to encompass the challenges of colourism within American Communities of color during the 1940s. The organized crime family (also an Italian American Family) from New york sends members of the organization to New Orleans to challenge the Italian American Crime family there. Thus the story takes on a vividly painted color palette based on New Orleans environment that mirrors the souring of the plot through Iago’s manipulations.
